Creation of Creatures

Creation of the Elves

With the Void barely held at bay the Goddess knew she needed to appoint some guardians of her new world so she sat down and thought. I took her a long time to decide what kind of being she would need to hold the Void creatures at bay.

She looked deep into the world and saw her beautiful forests that once stood proud with trees so tall they could talk to the sky. Now, the Void was marching across them, tearing up everything that stood in its way. Left unchecked there would be no trees, no plants, no life.

The Goddess asked the forests to give her a sapling. The forests were happy to give up one of their young in return for her help. So with one hand she picked up a healthy young sapling. She took the branches, the leaves and the buds. Carefully, she mixed it with a little clay and began crafting a creature.

The creature was tall and elegant, through its veins ran the life blood of trees. Forever, this creature would share a bond to the woodlands. Slowly and thoughtfully she crafted this graceful creature and gave it a name. These creatures would become the guardians of her forests and she named them elves.

The elves were ponderous creatures and not given to rash behaviour but slowly they began to hold the Void at bay to protect the trees. The elves stopped where the trees stopped, for their bond to the woods was still too strong for them to wander far from the trees. The elves dedicated themselves to protecting the woodlands as the woods were in their blood.

She watched as the time of the elves came and as they had begun to talk of living in cities. Then she knew her forests would always be protected from the Void. The elves, ever watchful, ever protected with their long memories would keep the woodlands safe.

Creation of the Dwarves

The Void creatures were not just on the land, they had spilled into the dark holes and cavernous places. Deep in the darkness they had thrived in the dark places. The Void creatures had thought they were safe from the eyes of the Goddess and could destroy the world from the inside out.

The Goddess had already seen the Void creatures sneaking about inside the caves so she thought the time had come for some of her own creatures. The Goddess reached down into the deepest of the caves and caverns she could find and pulled out a single gemstone.

The gem glowed in the sunlight with all the colours of the rainbow, a truly wondrous sight. The Void creatures cowered away from its beauty, they were afraid of it. Carefully the Goddess mixed the gem with some rock and clay. She knew some hardly creatures would be needed to survive the dark depths.

The depths were almost taken entirely by the Void, so the Goddess moved quickly. With haste, she began to craft the clay into some short stocky creatures. These would become the guardians of the caverns, an entire people who could tell gems from rocks and void from natural life. These creatures would become guardians of the caverns and she named them dwarves.

The dwarves became known for their swift decisions and their prowess as fighters. No race could parallel them for their abilities in the underground. Quickly, the dwarves began to grow and fight. It was not long before the Void creatures were being pushed back into the darkness. Swiftly the dwarven strongholds grew and the Goddess knew it would be the dwarves who would keep her caverns safe.

As the dwarves grew though, they turned their hand to the caves and caverns. They looked to the gemstones and the gold. Finally, they began to mine for precious metals and stones. The Goddess left them to their fate.

Creation of Humans

With many places now secure, the Goddess looked around to see where else the Void creatures were lurking. There were many places where the elves and dwarves did not tread that the Void was starting to claim for its own.

The Goddess turned her attention to the plains and deserts where many of the Void creatures were concealed in the sands and tall grasses. They hid half buried in the sand dunes or camouflaged in the long grass plains. There were no creatures to hold them at bay so they began to grow. First only here and there the void increased swiftly until the forests and caverns were in danger of falling.

The Goddess knew if her world was to be saved she needed a race, which would be larger than the elves or dwarves and quick to adapt to their different environments.

The Goddess took a little sand, a little rock and a little wood to combine and from this she sculpted a new race. This race would be able to protect all her lands but most especially the plains and deserts.

She watched the humans carefully, for they were a strange mixture, even the Goddess found it hard to predict what they would do next. She watched them grow from using sticks and stones. She watched them fight off the Void creatures with venom. She even watches as they started building whole settlements and cities.

As the cities grew the humans grew and took what they could from the land. This made her feel a little sad, but she knew without them the Void would have taken over the world.

Creation of other races

The Goddess looked to where the Void creatures would hide, the swamps, the sea, anywhere that life could be lived. There were a lot of places that the elves, dwarves and humans could not reach.

She sat down and pondered if a single race could live in all these places, but seeing the humans spread across the world she did not want a race that would be able to live everywhere. The elves had the forests, the dwarves had the caves, the humans had the plains. All those other places would need their own races.

Thoughtfully, she reached out her hand and created all manner of other races. The sea-creatures, the desert dwellers, the swamp people, hobbits, giants, halflings, goblins, ogres, orcs and beastmen. The world was filled with peoples who were ready to fight the Void creatures.

She watched the tribes come and go, some vanished, others flourished in these harsh places. Most though stayed, most fought the void creatures and the Goddess knew at last that her world was protected.
